5 Plumbing Repairs Every Homeowner Should KnowHandy tips to take care of the gremlins lurking in the toilet, sink, faucets, and in other home appliances.
So you have purchased a new home, feeling so excited and enjoying the ownership of your new property, but you are not aware of the gremlins and gnomes that are hiding under your new house’s kitchen and bathroom sinks, toilet bowls and bath tubs, yet.
The mischievous creatures are watching you with a sinister smile, as they are planning to vex you in the near future. However, regardless of these unforeseen plumbing issues, with little knowledge and understanding, every homeowner can conveniently take care of these tiny green creatures that sometimes clog your kitchen or bathroom sink, stop the water through the bath tub drain by sitting on it, or simply make a hole into the pipes and ducts to cause leakage to create a bigger mess.
A CLOGGED KITCHEN SINK (YOU CAN’T EAT UNTIL THE GREMLINS ARE GONE!)
A clogged kitchen is a very common issue. A sink equipped with garbage disposal can easily be un-clogged by turning the disposal switch on and let the water drain through it. But it happens in a perfect world; usually this trick does not work all the time. Sometimes you have to stick your hand deep down to find the root cause.
Maybe a chicken wishbone was the reason that has been killing all of your wishes or a tiny ball of paper towel was creating the snowball effect inside the garbage disposal. Whatever has been the reason, it creates a big problem for the kitchen users. In order to understand how does a sink work and what causes these issues, one has to educate about the appliance first before even trying to fix the plumbing issues.
WHERE ARE THE GREMLINS HIDING?
Normally it happens in the Sink Drain area, where the strainer is located. The next area is the Sink Trap, which a U-shaped pipe that takes the garbage out to the main drainage line. If you look right under the sink – towards the wall, underneath the faucet, you will see the Flexible Supply Tubes and the Shut-off valve, that helps cut-off the water in case of an overflow. They supply water to the faucet and can be looked into in the event of a faucet malfunction issue. A good set of common tools like Wrenches, Pliers, Screw Drivers, these parts can be loosened, tightened, and replaced easily.
THE DISHWASHER BLUES AND THE LAUGHING GREMLINS:
If the dishwasher is not working at all because there is no power, then there is a possibility of a short-circuit, a burnt motor or a faulty power cable or the outlet on the wall. However, if the power is there and the dishwasher is running fine, but the pots and pans are not coming out clean then there is a possibility that the dishwasher bucket is not draining the water and collecting it each time you run the dishwasher.
MAIN AREAS OF A DISHWASHER WHERE GREMLINS HIDE:
Upper Spray Bar: It sprays the water into the upper tray.
Lower Spray Bar: It sprays the water into the lower tray.
Filter Basket: It is located in the lower area – bottom of the dishwasher.
Wash/Drain Valve: It is located in the lower area – bottom bucket.
Normally, Vinegar helps to clear the collected water in the bucket, but Ammonia is not suggested – what people normally use after doing a quick Google search.
The other solution is to run the garbage disposal in the kitchen sink ( make sure you have enough water in the sink before running the garbage disposal) and it is recommended to run the garbage disposal a few times daily that helps clear the kitchen sink pipes and also the water in the bucket of the dishwasher. Filter basket can also be cleaned manually to prevent such issues.
WHY DO GREMLINS DON’T WANT YOU TO USE THE TOILET?
These gremlins lurking inside the toilet seat to clog the toilet so that you can’t use it. Why? because they don’t need any disturbance in the dark atmosphere of a bathroom.
On a serious note, a clogged Toilet is the biggest nightmare of all – it stops our life and the nature keeps calling. The flush tank is the main perpetrator mostly. Low pressured flush tanks and malfunctioning toilet is normally a professional plumber job, but a layman can also take care of such issues, with little effort. For the toilet itself, first the Emergency Shutoff Valve/Key should be turned to prevent the possible overflow, next, the Trapway/Weir area under the toilet seat can be cleared or unclogged, by using the Draino, CLR and other drain-opener/chemicals available in the market, help a lot, however, if the object stuck in the toilet requires a human intervention, then after using a snake that is available in the market that helps unclog the toilet, sometime plumbers have to stick their hand to remove the object. Now t is your call whether you want to do it yourself or call a plumber – it is all up to you.
HOW TO KILL THE GREMLINS IN THE FLUSH TANK?
Checking the gremlins under the flush handle first, would be a wise starting point. Then move to the Trip Lever, Float Ball, Lift Chain and the Tank Ball in the bottom of the Tank, where the green culprits hide easily. These parts are available in the market on very economical prices and can be easily tweaked, fixed or replaced. This effort brings back the flush tank back into order – saves a lot of time, money and toilet-less nights.
HOW ABOUT THE SOME GREMLINS PROWLING IN THE BATHROOM SINK ?
When we fixed the kitchen sink, some gremlins escaped towards the bathroom sink and clogged it. The bathroom sink has the same style and plumbing design as the kitchen sink. The sink faucet and the clogging issue, also can easily be fixed with a nice set of tools, or you can check plumbers liverpool, for plumbing services in your area .
AFTER LOSING EVERYWHERE, THE GREMLINS CLOG THE BATH TUB
Last but not the least, a clogged bath tub also attributes to the same gremlins. The gremlins block the drainage and the water starts becoming stagnant in the tub. Like we unclog the toilet, we can use the same snake tool to clear the objects stuck in the drain pipe of the bath tub. Since it is a fixture like a toilet seat and there are no parts visible to touch or fix, it is very difficult for a non-plumber. However, the some chemicals can be used to unclog the drain of the tub. The above tips can be applied to the sinks and tubs of your new home and the gremlins will start moving to some other place in your neighborhood where they find a more suitable environment to block and clog the drains and sinks.
